Greetings from the Netherlands. The first thing I get is free tap water. Great!!! Why can't they just serve it in German restaurants, too?!

Strait of Gibralta

InsideMarocco. Just blue and white...? The narrow strait connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. It separates Gibraltar in Europe from Marocco in Africa.

Now many migrants are rediscovering the route, across the hazardous Strait of Gibraltar from Morocco to Spain. It's a strange feeling to just fly over that path of hope and fear. 

And me, I could fly over, without any struggles. Just because I'm lucky. Lucky, because I'm born at the right time, at the right place.

2015 review: Their borders are not my borders

When looking back at year 2015 we can definately say that it wasn't a boring one. Or let's put it differently: Our world seemed and still seems to descend into total chaos. There's so much happening at the same time: Wars, migration flows, terrorism, climate change and much more. Nobody knows, if 2016 will be better or worse.

But while 2015, taken as a whole, was a really bad year for Europe and a successful one for nationalists, for me personally it was the most European year I've ever had in my life! I've never had so many friends and facebook-contacts whithin the European Union and beyond. Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary, Turkey, Italy, France, Britain, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands, Bosnia and Herzegovina, USA, Ukraine, Iran, Russia, Georgia ... And indeed, I'm still texting with some of these people and I'm still thinking a lot about them. I've never met so many warm-hearted people from different nations than in 2015. I'm really grateful and I wouldn't like to miss this wonderful experience.

Paris

Three days after the deadly attacks in Paris on Friday, 52 out of 608 of my Facebook friends still take part in the social network's "French flag campaign" by applying the filter to their profile pictures to show their support for France. So did I.
Why? For the moment it's not a gesture of politics, but of humanity. Of course one could ask, why I don't use a Syrian flag filter or other filters.
Well, firstly, I couldn't find other filters. Secondly, campaigns like these are only active in special circumstances, in Syria for example people are dying almost all the time. When exactly should I change my profile picture? Thirdly, France is a neighbouring country and in some parts of Germany Paris is closer than Berlin! Fourthly and most important: I really feel sorry for my French friends and people I spent time with during my Erasmus semester. These are the ones of my Facebook friends who mainly use the Frensh-flag-filter. In second place are the ones who spent a considerable time in that country.
Thus, applying the filter is a lot about personal consternation. I think at first there is nothing wrong with declaring one's solidarity right after the tragedy happened. You shouldn't blame people for doing so.

Was machen wir bloß mit der bösen AfD?

Kuscheliges Nest für Unzufriedene

In der medialen Debatte ist die AfD heute das Topthema. "AfD wird zur salonfähigen Neuen Rechten" (Cicero), "Salon-Populisten im Glück" (SZ), "AfD schrumpft Merkels Machtoptionen" (Spiegel).

Spätestens nach diesem Wochenende müsste jeder den Namen dieser Partei kennen. Die "Alternative für Deutschland" (AfD) erzielte bei den Landtagswahlen in Thüringen und Brandenburg zweistellige Wahlergebnisse und hat nun Anspruch auf Mitarbeiter und Büros in den beiden Landtagen. Die Partei versucht Politik zu gestalten. Was sie aber bestenfalls macht, ist unzufriedenen Bürgern ein kuscheliges Nest zu versprechen.

Auch wenn alle über die AfD sprechen, hat keiner ein Patentrezept oder eine Strategie, wie der neuen Partei begegnet werden soll. Die "etablierten" Parteien sind ratlos und reagieren fast trotzig auf diese rechtspopulistischen Eindringlinge, die Unruhe in das Parteiensystem bringen. Statt aber die Arme zu verschränken und zu sagen "Nee, mit denen spiele ich nicht!" oder "Ach, die verschwinden doch eh wieder, genau wie die Piraten!", sollten Politiker nun endlich aufwachen. So unschön es klingt: Die AfD ist keine reine Protestpartei. Politik und Bürger müssen auf die wachsende Frustration und/oder Verunsicherung in der Bevölkerung reagieren und eine ernsthafte gesellschaftliche Debatte führen. Die fand im Bankenrettungschaos der großen Wirtschafts- und Finanzkrise lange keinen Platz. 

Demokratie pur. Die "Wahl" des EU-Kommissionspräsidenten

Ich lese mal wieder Zeitung: 

"Juncker hatte die EVP als Spitzenkandidat für das Amt des Kommissionspräsidenten zum Sieg bei den Europawahlen 2014 geführt." 

Yeeaaa, denke ich, ein Sieg der Demokratie! Das Volk hat schließlich für ihn gestimmt! Weiter lesen, das macht doch Laune. 

"Um Behördenchef zu werden, muss Juncker von den 28 Staats- und Regierungschefs der EU mit qualifizierter  Mehrheit als Kandidat vorgeschlagen und danach im Parlament gewählt werden. Unter den 28 Chefs ist ein Streit ausgebrochen, ob Juncker der geeignete Kandidat ist." 

Äh was, diese Entscheidung hat das Volk den Regierungschefs doch abgenommen...?! Ich bin verdrossen.

Parteienkonkurrenz

Ist "DIE PARTEI" eigentlich eine Therapie für Politikverdrossene oder bewirkt sie eher das Gegenteil?  So ganz habe ich das noch nicht herausgefunden. Wahlplakate wie "Hände weg von deutschen Titten! Nein zu EU-Norm-Brust!" sind hier zu betrachten: http://www.die-partei.de/. Vielleicht findet jemand mit diesen Placebos aus seiner Politik-Depression heraus...
